Finding a Leak in a Cabin Nobody Lives In

Blue Ridge mountain country in northeast Georgia, in the upper Chattahoochee basin, with Mount Yonah over the middle of it.
True Hand Roofing has worked in Cleveland, the county seat, and covers the rest of the county from the same base.
We handle roof replacements, repairs, hands-on inspections, and we photograph and document storm damage for insurance claims.
Georgia has both, and they are not near each other.
White County is where you are. Northeast Georgia, Blue Ridge mountains, 28,003 residents across 242 square miles, county seat Cleveland. It was created in 1857 and named for David T. White, a state representative who helped get the act creating it passed — not for anyone or anything in the northwest of the state.
White, Georgia is a small city of 661 people in Bartow County, about nine miles north of Cartersville, on the far side of the state and roughly sixty miles away. Different county, different mountains, different everything.
This is not a pedantic distinction. A roofing search for "White GA" lands somewhere very different from a search for "White County GA", and a contractor who cannot tell them apart is not the one to trust with your address. Internally we identify every place we serve by its US Census code rather than its name — White County is 13311, the city of White is 1382468 — so a name collision can never quietly turn into a wrong claim about where we work.
White County is genuinely high country. Tray Mountain, on the Towns County line, reaches 4,430 feet; Mount Yonah stands at 3,143 feet in the middle of the county; part of the Chattahoochee National Forest and all of Unicoi State Park sit inside the boundary, and the upper Chattahoochee gathers here before it goes anywhere near Atlanta.
For a roof, elevation is not scenery — it is the job description. Steep sites decide where a truck can stage and where a dump trailer can sit. Dense canopy over a roof plane keeps the north slope damp long after the south slope has dried, and fills valleys and gutters with needle litter every autumn. Winter here swings across freezing more often than it does in the ridge-and-valley counties an hour west.
None of that makes a White County roof harder to do well. It makes it a roof that has to be looked at, on the roof, before anyone puts a number on it. A satellite outline will tell you the square footage; it will not tell you that the only approach is a single-track drive, or that the valley metal is 15 years past its detail.
Two incorporated cities, two census-designated communities, and everything unincorporated in between.
The county seat, and where our completed White County work sits. It has its own page rather than being restated here — costs, ice damming, valley details, and working around short-term rental calendars are all covered there. See the Cleveland page →
A census-designated community of 332 people across about three and a half square miles of valley floor at roughly 1,483 feet. The Sautee Valley Historic District — around a thousand acres, on the National Register since 1986 — sits inside it, along with the Sautee Nacoochee Center and the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia. Practically, that means a building stock that skews old, and a valley that holds morning damp longer than the ridges above it. Older roof structures here reward looking at the deck and the flashing before anyone talks about shingle colour.
657 residents on about three square miles, at roughly 1,595 feet — the highest of the county's census places, and named with the Cherokee word for bear, the same word behind Mount Yonah itself. This is scattered, wooded, upslope property. Access is the first thing we assess, because on a Yonah lot how the crew reaches the roof affects the schedule more than the roof size does.
The county's other incorporated city, just over two square miles on the Chattahoochee at the north end of the county. As an incorporated city it may handle its own permitting separately from the county, which is one of the reasons we confirm jurisdiction by address rather than by county line. See the Helen page →
White County is one of the few counties in our footprint that answers this question in print. Its building permit FAQ states plainly that permits are not needed for new shingles on a roof or for roof repair. A permit is required to build, enlarge, alter, repair, move or change a building or structure — so once a job stops being a re-roof and starts touching structure, decking or framing, it is back in permit territory.
The county's Building Permit and Inspection Department works out of 1235 Helen Highway, in Cleveland. Cleveland and Helen are incorporated cities and can set their own requirements inside their limits, so a county rule is not automatically your rule. We confirm which authority covers your address before starting, and we document the finished work either way.
